How to Test a PS4 Controller

Use a micro-USB data cable, or hold Share and PS for three seconds until the light bar flashes, then pair it.

Press any button so the browser exposes the DualShock 4.

Press every button, including Share, Options, PS and the touchpad click.

Squeeze L2 and R2 slowly, then rotate each stick and release it.

Run the rumble presets, then connect via HID for touchpad position, gyro and battery.
DualShock 4 Versions
The first model (CUH-ZCT1) has a light bar only on the top edge. The v2 (CUH-ZCT2) adds a light strip on the touchpad and can send data over USB.
Both versions use the same buttons and sensors, so every test on this page applies to either one.
Typical Wear on an Older Pad
Many DualShock 4 pads are now several years old. The rubber on the sticks wears through, and L2 or R2 springs weaken.
Run the drift test and watch the trigger bars at rest. A trigger that rests at 0.05 or higher can fire actions in some games.
DualShock 4 Over USB vs Bluetooth
The v1 DualShock 4 only charges over USB on some systems and sends data over Bluetooth. If it does not appear when wired, pair it wirelessly instead.
The v2 sends data over USB on every major system. A wired connection also gives the most stable polling rate for latency tests.

Common PS4 Controller Problems and Fixes
Older DualShock 4 pads tend to fail in the same few ways.
Bluetooth drops out
Charge the pad fully and keep it near the receiver. If it still drops, the battery may need replacing.
Will not charge or connect by USB
The micro-USB port loosens with age. Try another cable before replacing the charging board.
Stick drift
Clean around the stick base first. If the drift test still fails, replace the stick module.
Sticky buttons
Spilled drinks leave residue under the face buttons. Open the pad and clean the membrane with isopropyl alcohol.
Touchpad not responding
Press firmly in the middle. If clicks register but touch does not, check touch tracking over WebHID.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the DualShock 4 work on PC?
Yes. Windows, macOS and Linux all recognise it over USB or Bluetooth, and Chrome or Edge read it as a standard pad.
Why does my DS4 disconnect on Bluetooth?
Weak batteries and USB 3 interference are the usual causes. Recharge it and move the receiver away from USB 3 ports.
Is v1 different from v2?
The v2 (CUH-ZCT2) adds a light strip on the touchpad and USB data mode. Both test the same way here.
Why is L2 or R2 stuck at a low value?
A tired trigger spring or dirt under the trigger can stop it returning to 0. Cleaning usually fixes it.
Does the DS4 work on a PS5?
Yes, for PS4 games running on the PS5. Most PS5 games need a DualSense.
How do I reset a DualShock 4?
Press a paperclip into the small hole on the back, near L2, for five seconds. Then reconnect it with a cable.
Can I test a third-party PS4 controller?
Yes. Most licensed and unlicensed PS4-style pads report as standard gamepads. Touchpad and gyro may not work over WebHID.
